Someone with a real interest in the well being of the Palestinian people would best preach
pragmatism with regards to RoR and a certain degree of flexibility with regards to territory swaps.

It’s difficult to discern a meaningful difference. Still it’s nice to know you’ve got the “well being of the Palestinian people” at heart.

Yotam-

Your other point is preposterous. So now religious parties in a representative democracy are frowned upon? Would you prefer a Stalinist dictatorship?

Spare me the histrionics-aside from the fact that “representative democracy” and “Jewish state” have thus far been irreconcilable, I was merely pointing out an electoral reality. Smaller religious parties frequently hold the balance of power and are able to extract concessions for agreeing to enter into coalitions etc. I’m not frowning on their representation in particular as I consider the entire state to be an unrepresentative ethnocracy sustained in contarvention of International Law.

Can you explain how come Jews aren’t allowed to live in any of these Arab settlements?
Can you explain why you don’t call it a racist endeavour?
Can You explain why Jews aren’t allowed into Arab countries without some “special” dispensation?

I’m happy to call racism when I see it. Which settlements are you referring to and which policy of prohibiting Jewish residence?

Strange- I didn’t notice your explanation of why Israel’s policy of establishing Jews only settlements in the West Bank is anything other than a racialistic endeavour.

Could you clarify: do you believe the Jews as a separate ethic [sic] group have the right, in principle, to establishment a state of their own? If you do, then fine. If you don’t, then why not?

Absolutely no problem in principle but I don’t believe the ends justify the means. Had Palestine really been a “land without people”, then as far as I am concerned, the Jews would be welcome to set up a nation state, a chip shop, a bookie, strip joint and anything else that took their fancy. The problem is the territory the Zionists coveted was already populated by a majority of non-Jews. Why should they be obliged to make way for a Jewish state?

However, the Khazar people, would only have made up a fraction of the total existing Jewish population. Secondly, their conversion does not make their Jewishness less.

Anyway, Anti-Semites use this theory to claim that European (Ashkenazi) Jews have no connection to the land of Palestine as they supposedly descend from the Khazars and that European Jewry is somehow a geneaological ‘fiction’ irrelevant to Israel.

What evidence do pro-Zionists have to the contrary? What was the converted Jewish Khazar population cf the population of “original” Jews in Europe at the time? On a related note, a contributor upthread suggested that the Palestinian Arab genotype implies Jewish ancestry. Does this mean the Palestinian Arab claim to the territory known as Israel is just as valid that of any Jew (Torah-toting or otherwise)?

Pretzelberg (to pre-emptive response)-

“You have undeniably charged Israel with genocidal policies – where and when is hardly of relevance (given that all these threads are relatively recent).”

The term “genocide” was coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944-This is his definition-

“By ‘genocide’ we mean the destruction of an ethnic group . . . . Generally speaking, genocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation, except when accomplished by mass killings of all members of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. The objectives of such a plan would be disintegration of the political and social institutions, of culture, language, national feelings, religion, and the economic existence of national groups, and the destruction of the personal security, liberty, health, dignity, and even the lives of the individuals belonging to such groups . . ..”

There seems to be significant overlap between this definition and Israel’s policies toward the Palestinian people. Golda Meir notoriously claimed there was no such thing as the Palestinian people and Ariel Sharon’s “Pastrami Sandwich” policy (enthusiastically implemented by ALL Israeli governments since) was configured to make it so.

Spare us the reasons why you “get” F16s when they get fireworks.

Spare us the chapter and verse on how anti-semitism is on the rise the world over.

Spare us.

Think again.

Spare us the “War of Civilisations” and the rhetorical crud and the “civilised values” guff.

Open your eyes.

When a bomb drops on a Palestinian home killing many who’ve never harmed you, pay attention.

When the shrapnel disembowels a sleeping baby, pay close attention to the reactions of the self-styled people of faith who run Israel.

Spare us the conclusion that the only reason Israel kills children is through “self-defence”.

Spare us the “Israel’s policies are searching for peace” and “the homes, after all, are used to rear terrorists” and all the other scholarly, arrogant, condescending and amoral ways of saying “they had it coming to them.”

Spare us the understanding for the motivations of the mass murderers Ariel and Olmert and others who killed with Washington’s blessings. Spare us the understanding of the words of the Israeli official who says we only collaterally damage civilians during the course of inflicting a “shoah”.

Spare us the chants of “Death to Arabs” that began in Jerusalem just after the minister promised a “shoah”. Spare us the sight of the guns being provided by the IDF to West Bank settlers in American accents, soldiers to protect illegal colonization of the land of a people dispossessed for the “crime” of not being Jewish.

Spare us the righteousness of those who spurned Hamas calls for a ceasefire,

Open your eyes.

Last week, when Israeli forces drove into Gaza, and some 120 Palestinians were killed, many of them were NOT gunmen, with children making up a sixth of the total, one grieving father spoke with quiet eloquence, saying “Other places in the world, when this happens, there is a great outcry. When this happens here, the world is silent. No one cares.”

He’s right. The world has grown content to let Palestinians die.

The world has grown blind to the Palestinian suffering, only the death of jews makes the world pay attention.

Even the West, which for decades championed Israel with weapons and money, have, in large part, run out of whitewash. The reason is that the rulers of Israel are people who see an intrinsic value in a sectarian supremacist state.

The rulers of Israel cannot bring themselves to accept the concept of sharing Palestine with Palestinians.

The best that the rulers of Israel can do, is to bring an apocalypse on their own people and ours as well.

You don’t have to be Nostradamus (was he jewish?) to see it doesn’t look good (for anyone!).

Not in my name

Is there any truth in the story that large numbers of Sephardi jewish children were given dangerous doses of radiation as part of a secret “eugenics” program during Israel’s early history? I know it seems like a bizarre cospiracy theory but I have heard it from more than one (in my view) credible source. I wonder in whose “name” such a policy would have been enacted.

If the Jews really are “God’s Chosen People”, then surely S/He would have had a rather more impressive destiny in mind for his “chosen” ones then wasting their talents on this dysfunctional category mistake known as Israel

I feel that Zionism has deformed Judaism (the bedrock religion of monotheism) into an Israel uber alles cult.

Interesting article-From my (non-Jewish) perspective, it seems that the post-Holocaust trauma of the Jewish people has had subtle, long-term and pernicious consequences for the collective “Jewish soul”. I believe that the behaviour and attitude of many Israelis today is linked to the experience of the Holocaust in a way that is similar to the behaviour of many abusive adults being derived from experiences of abuse as children. Do any other contributors have any (better-informed) thoughts on this subject?

Can anyone explain to me why holocaust denial is anti-semitic? Surely an anti-semite would endorse the holocaust rather than deny it?

I was taught as a child that it was important to remember the Holocaust so atrocities on this scale would never be repeated. It became a metaphor for the sickness of all racism. Somewhere along the way the Holocaust seems to have become a fig-leaf for Israeli atrocities and justification for racism against Palestineans. The victims of the Holocaust are left with a rather shabby legacy.
