Guardian photo caption runs interference for ‘Hamas Jihad Camp’, again.

On June 18, we  noted  a photo  caption from  the Guardian’s ‘Picture Desk Live’ series which softened the combat training  of a Palestinian youth  at a Hamas summer camp  as “physical training.”   Further, as we noted, the original image in question (at Getty Images) by the same photographer included a caption clearly noting that the youths were indeed engaged in “military exercises”, and that the photojournalist site Demotix  included several photos of the exact same ‘camp’ with the title: ‘Palestinians participate in military style exercises run by Hamas’.

Additionally, we included links to other news sites and photos which clearly indicated that the primary focus of the Hamas run camps is military training and ideological indoctrination.

More recently, the Guardian published another photo with a caption describing camps in Gaza even more misleading than their June 18th edition.

A photo story in the Observer (sister publication of the Guardian) titled ’20 photographs of the week’, June 29th, included one image of a Palestinian girl jumping rope at a UN-run traditional camp in Gaza City, but added the following caption, noting other camping opportunities for Gaza’s children over the summer.

Palestinian girl Alaa Soboh participates in a skipping rope game during UN-run summer fun games week in Gaza City. Tens of thousands of children from the Gaza Strip spend part of their holidays in special summer camps. Some, organised by the UN, offer sports, art and dance classes. Others, laid on by Gaza’s Islamist rulers Hamas, include fun and games, while seeking to reinforce religious values and awareness of the conflict with Israel.

So, according to the Observer caption, Hamas-run camps merely reinforce “awareness of the conflict with Israel.”  As such language would leave the impression that children are merely receiving educational instruction on the political dynamics of the “conflict”, here are some photos from the camps, which (as reported on multiple new sites), are clearly military in nature.

Though Harriet Sherwood did file one report, back in April, on Hamas military training of Palestinian children in Gaza schools, the Guardian has thus far failed to devote any coverage on such summer camps (run by both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad), which train over 100,000 kids (ages 6 to 16) each summer in skills such as firing machine guns, assaulting military positions, kidnapping soldiers, and planting land mines.

It’s impossible to understand the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict without at least a basic understanding of the role which incitement, the glorification of violence and antisemitic propaganda play in inculcating generations of Palestinians with values fundamentally at odds with peace and coexistence with the Jewish state.

The Guardian’s tendency to avoid accurately reporting on Jihadist indoctrination in Gaza certainly represents an egregious lie of omission.  However, it also has the injurious impact of ensuring that their readers will never understand that Palestinians possess moral agency, and therefore should be held completely accountable for collective decisions which result in their society’s continuing social, economic, and political failures.

  1. “The Guardian’s tendency to avoid accurately reporting on Jihadist indoctrination in Gaza certainly represents an egregious lie of omission. ”

I disagree .It is a minor sin. The actual type of opposition to Israel is hardly important given that so many are in prison, so many have been targeted and there have been allegations that different groups are favoured by and their path to rule made easier by Israel . The BBC gets it right here I believe .

Having said that not a bad article.

    • Rosco: “The actual type of opposition to Israel is hardly important”. Training children to kill and putting them in harm’s way is not important?
“different groups are favoured by and their path to rule made easier by Israel”. Got any more conspiracy theories you’d care to share.
How about the “path” of bringing children up for peace and cooperation, rather than genocide? Just a crazy idea of mine.

    • .It is a minor sin. The actual type of opposition to the USl is hardly important given that so many are in prison, so many have been targeted and there have been allegations that different groups are favoured by and their path to rule made easier by the US.
A very elegant way to justify the destruction of the WTC.

    • Once again, Rascal Burnout doesn’t miss the opportunity to nector and bash Israel. He’s worried that Jews are strong now and can defend themselves. Pathetic eurotrash dhimmi.

    • Right. So many Palestinian freedom fighters are in prison. And yet so many vocal proponents glamorizing the role of hating Israelis populate the interwebz. Just remember, Champ. You are a much larger reason for those dead Palestinian children than I ever will be.

      Take that to your grave.

  2. ” He’s worried that Jews are strong now and can defend themselves.”

You seem to know so much about me that I don’t myself know. I hadn’t really seen myself as worrying about anything except my local pub closing , so I guess I have to thank you for the insight.

    .” Pathetic eurotrash dhimmi.”

    Everyone a winner.

  3. I suppose we are getting to the point of this boaster Rosco

The soft version of antisemitic conspiracies by Rosco stating allegations by unnamed sources.

It is the hard core stereotype in one of the different phenotypes that Jews have to blame themselves, for Antisemitism, the Holocaust, for the terror, the classical inversion of guilt. Not the perpetrator is guilty, the victim is. The Jews are to be blamed.
And how do these perverse minds arrive at this conclusion? By insinuating that the victim is the perpetrator who is responsible for the violence he earns, therefore: without Jews no Antisemitism, no Holocaust, no terror – a simple solution, subtraction.
You understand what is implicated by this, the Endlösung.

That intelligence agencies of Israel try to infiltrate these various terror goups in order to prevent terror acts and to protect the citizens, doesn`t come to such perverse minds.

    • The sheer amount of mental muddle, intellectual dishonesty and moral bankruptcy of postmodern appeasers such as this Rascal Burned is just amazing. The comical thing is that while they embrace all types of anti-Semitic stereotypes, double-standards, distortions and lies; and despite ending up defending/enabling Jew-haters (if not supporting them openly) using the farcical mask of “fairness”, still they behave like delicate flowers when their Jew-hater is pointed out.

They want the best of the worlds: being Jew-haters while not being classified as such; and more, they want to be seen as humanitarian beacons! Their cowardice is so astounding that it makes the likes of Julius Streicher look as moral paragons.

  4. Teaching boys how to use rocket-propelled grenades is plain barmy – whether in Gaza, Israel, or Springfield.

  5. This sums up Harriet Sherwood.

    Get Your Head Around This

Writing about US Secretary of State John Kerry’s latest Middle East visit, Harriet Sherwood of The Guardian includes the following sentence:

Israel says it is willing to negotiate without preconditions, but has so far refused to meet Palestinian demands.

I’m still trying to get my head around this. Does it even make sense?

  6. Ofcourse the Guardian doesn’t report this.
If you were a Pallywood Propagandist like Harriet Sherwood would you want to tell your radical audience Palestinians are sadists by strapping bombs on their children and using their children as Human Fodder.

As Golda Meir 40 years ago said.
“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.”

  7. You think the Guardian would ever print this article about Hamas child abuse.
    Heck No!

Palestinian Journalist Blames Hamas for Problems In Gaza
“I feel even sorrier today for the people in Gaza as Hamas is pulling a publicity stunt with their blood.”
    Rachel Avraham
    June 30th, 2013

Palestinian journalist Mudar Zahran claims the Hamas government in Gaza is corrupt, abuses its people and is to blame when Israel is forced to air-strike terrorist targets.

Mudar Zahran, a Jordanian Palestinian political activist and writer whocalls for peace with Israel, has emphasized that he believes Hamas is responsible for all qassam rockets fired into Israeli territory, even when the Palestinian Islamic Jihad or another group is the one taking responsibility. While noting that there are disagreements between the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas, especially in the wake of the present crisis in Syria, Zahran still believes that Hamas permits the Palestinian Islamic Jihad to wage attacks against Israel from Gazan territory for it is in their interest to do so.

“Having a confrontation between Gaza and Israel is good business for Hamas, who makes a lot of money off of the deprivation of average people in Gaza. Hamas is to blame for every thing that happens in Gaza. They don’t care for the blood and humanity of their people,” Zahran claims. “Hamas is creating a situation where scarcity and poverty help make people submit. This is nightmarish. The only job Gazans can have is joining Hamas.”

Yet at the same time, Zahran has emphasized that due to the rise of President Morsi in Egypt and the international political situation, it is better for Hamas if the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and not them, gets the credit for initiating the violence. According to Zahran, “Hamas is not about Islam any more but business and investment. It is a true dictatorship. It is willing to sell its own Islamist values for the sake of money if the right price is offered.”

He continued, “People should realize that Hamas has changed. Hamas now wants interest, whenever they can find it. They will give in for whoever they are getting money. Hamas leaders now have a lot to lose if they are killed or attacked. They have houses, German cars, millions of dollars.” For this reason, Hamas gives the Palestinian Islamic Jihad the green light to operate against Israel, while refraining from taking actions on their own, so all Israeli retaliations will affect the Palestinian Islamic Jihad more than them, while the blockade works to distract the Palestinian people from Hamas’ oppression and to consolidate Hamas rule over Gaza.

Zahran claimed, “I feel even sorrier today for the people in Gaza as Hamas is pulling a publicity stunt with their blood.Ultimately Gazans are paying the ultimate price for Hamas arrogance, ignorance and stupidity.” He continued, “Every year, Israelis should expect a couple of occasions where Hamas attacks, which shows how little value Hamas has for its own people when Israel counter-attacks. Even if I was an Islamist or pro-Hamas, it would be very stupid to send a rocket that rarely causes damage to receive F-16’s in return. They hide in the bunker and let their own people suffer.”

Zahran concluded, “The world should do something to counter Hamas as it is just like al Qaeda, willing to butcher its own people. I cry for anyone hurt from my people but I take the blame on Hamas and Hamas only.” Zahran believes there is no military solution to the Gazan problem. He suggests empowering moderates in Gaza to overthrow Hamas by getting an outside entity to provide Gazans with jobs and the economic means to throw off the yoke of Hamas. He believes that should this happen, Hamas could be overthrown within a few years.
