What the Guardian won’t report: Arabs bully religious Jews in Jerusalem

When I first saw the clip, posted on Facebook by a friend shortly after Shabbat, my stomach churned with a discomfort nurtured by a very particular history.

1A small group of religiously observant, traditionally dressed, peyote wearing Jews are seen outside in some city centre, hurriedly attempting to get to their destination, as they are confronted by a group of hooded youths.

One of the pursued men falls as he slips on a step while attempting to escape the mob.

The shaky hand-held camcorder follows the Jews as they are pelted with snowballs, pushed and shoved. The sound of mocking laughter is heard.

As the Jews continue onto the sidewalk, attempting to distance themselves from the original gang, others emerge to confront them.

There are menacing shouts from the crowd. More snowballs are thrown at the moving targets as they attempt in vain to avoid the confrontation.

A traditional hat is quickly snatched from one of the pursued men.

One spectator is seen excitedly photographing the moment, clearly enjoying a first-hand view of the frightened Jew.

More laughter.

Soon, backpack wearing children now take their turn. Additional keffiyeh-wearing youths seize the moment.

Without any context, I had on some level initially believed that the one minute and fifteen second YouTube video was filmed on the streets of a European city and not, as I later learned, near the Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The attack took place on Shabbat. The victims were possibly on their way back from praying at the Kotel (Western Wall).

A quick glance at the Israel page of the Guardian confirms that such ugly images of antisemitic bullying by Arabs, in the capital of the Jewish state, do not pique the journalistic curiosity of the paper’s Jerusalem correspondent.

      • What CIF Watch won’t report: Shas’ bigoted video using Jewish conversion for incitment against Israeli citizens of Russian origin.

I’m looking forward to seeing Mr Levick post this video and tell us us that his stomach churned with a discomfort nurtured by such a racist story.

    • I strongly disapprove what these teenagers were doing. There was no reason to harass these two Haredim who were not bothering anyone.

That said, the Algemeiner’s title is one of the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read: “Shocking Footage: Arabs Laugh as They Terrorize, Abuse Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem”.

Have snowballs recently been included in the list of “terror” weapons?

Seriously… the Algemeiner turns itself into laughingstock with this kind of title. Israel faces a number of serious security issues, but snowball fights are not one of them.

      • Please, tell us: who the heck gives a damn about your approvals and disapprovals? You seem to have a delusional sense of grandeur, as if your so-called opinios were very important. This is a symptom of psychosis. Curiously, your sock-puppets ariel-the-moron and hadara-the-turd have the very same problems.

      • “the Algemeiner’s title is one of the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read”

Obviously ‘Nat’ you do not read the drivel you post here.
After watching the video your contemptible attempt to portray this racist incident merely as “snowball fights” says a lot about your biased and racist agenda.

Now be a good boy/girl and crawl back under the same stones as the other racist scum clearly shown in this video.

          • ‘Nat’ if you regard the incident clearly shown on this video as “play with snowballs”
then either you have not watched the video clip or you need to tell the organ grinder who sends you here to post drivel that they need to change their monkey.

            • As I said, harassing these two Haredi who were walking on the street was unacceptable and clearly disturbing.

That said, it’s ridiculous to write that they were “terrorized”. There were no weapons involved, just snowballs.

      • It starts with snow balls… I read an article on Ynet over the last few days about hoodies and the rise in teen age senseless violence such as “happy slapping”. this is in line with other western nations. this article is more. about how NGOs milk these incidents and outlets such as the Guardian report it when the culprits are Jewish but keep quiet when the culprits are Arabs.

    • I’m still waiting to see Mr Levick post a video of far right wing extremists attacking migrants in south Tel Aviv, and to tell us us that his stomach churned with a discomfort nurtured by such stories.

  1. People living in East Jerusalem are not “Arabs”, they’re Palestinians.

Mr Levick is not “a Caucasian”, he’s an Israeli.

    • Three things – 1. Can a person not be both an Arab AND a Palestinian? Or Caucasian AND Israeli?

      2. Are you saying that Palestinians live in East Jerusalem? Have you seen these peoples’ passports? Might they not be Egyptians? Syrians? Jordanians? Algerians?

      3. So bloody what? Does the “nationality” of the perpetrators make this incident any more or less savoury?

      • Palestinians live throughout the territory of the state of Palestine – West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza.

          • No, it didn’t. You seem to be a kind of robot, repeating the same mantras over and over again. Now, why not bring up your alter-egos, ariel-the-moron and hadara-the-imbecile, just for a change?

          • ‘Nat’ I very rarely agree with the current Government of the U.K. or its representatives. But I agree with a lot the U.K. Representative said at the UN meeting. From your own link ‘Nat’

“The representative of the United Kingdom said he was gravely concerned about the action the Assembly had taken, saying that “the window for a negotiated solution was rapidly closing”. Israel and Palestine must return to credible negotiations to save a two-State solution. The Palestinian leadership should, without precondition, return to the table.
Further, he said, United Nations entities should not take immediate action based on today’s resolution, which in turn would make a negotiated solution impossible. In that regard, his delegation had abstained in voting on the resolution. Although Palestine had just became a non-Member Observer State, that would not change the situation on the ground. All possible efforts should be made in the coming weeks to restart peace negotiations.”

Now which part of the penultimate sentence do you ‘Nat’ and the other terrorist cheerleaders fail to understand?

          • ““The representative of the United Kingdom said he was gravely concerned about the action the Assembly had taken, saying that “the window for a negotiated solution was rapidly closing”. Israel and Palestine must return to credible negotiations to save a two-State solution.”

It’s not the UK, it’s all of the European Union which called on Netanyahu to immediately put an end to his settlement policy and return to credible negotiations.

Netanyahu has so far refused, which prompted President Shimon Peres to warn that settlers’ idea of a binational state endangered the Jewish, Zionist and democratic nature of Israel.

Peres said that “there is no alternative” to a two-state solution and called on Likud to state this explicitly. There is a clear majority among the Israeli public that supports a Palestinian state existing side by side with a Jewish one.

Peres also reminded Netanyahu that he can reach an agreement with Abbas, one of the only leaders in the Arab world to publicly and boldly say that he supports peace and a demilitarized state, and to oppose terrorism.

          • ‘Nat’ would you like to attempt to answer the question in my post which is which part of this sentence do you fail to understand?
“Although Palestine had just became a non-Member Observer State, that would not change the situation on the ground”

Don’t waste your time with the knee jerk responses that you have been told to use by your organ grinder, try to answer the question posed to you.

        • Palestinians also leave in Israel so it seems.
Either way they are Arabs in the same token I am Ashkenazi.
The only taken offense by people identifying them as Arabs is you.
They take pride in it – as they should.
It is their heritege, their culture.
          What’s your problem with it?
          Are you racist?
Do you see them as infants that cannot make up their mind?

  2. Of course I feel as much outrage as you wrt these boys being abused but I wonder if it has made their communities a bit more likely to be wary of their friends amongst the Palestinians?

  3. Of course the video shows an example of inexcusable bullying. However, in the scale of such things this is a minor incident. Have a look at this recent film of Israelis’ racist hostility towards Africans:

    http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/disturbing-new-video-israeli-jews-assaulting-africans-tel-aviv-new-years-eve?utm_source=EI+readers&utm_campaign=4407d42d0b-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email

Again there is little actual violence but, whereas the Haredim are subjected to snowballs and mocking laughter, the Africans meet with open hatred reminiscent of fascist groups in Western Europe.

    • Isn`t it nice of Israel letting in illegal Muslim Africans who didn`t want to stay in the blessed Muslim states of Egypt, Sudan, Somalia? Understandably some Isrealis get upset when some of those try to behave like in Sudan, Somalia, …
Well, Sencar, maybe you can help those forlourn souls out of Africa by teaching them civil behaviour? Or can`t you?

      • Thisd reads like you’ve had a couple of drinks, Fritz. Perhaps I’ll understand what you’re getting at if you try again when you’ve slept it off.

      • The Israelis are clearly loopy to be letting Muslim Africans in. You can see what letting in Pakistani Muslims – millions of them – has done for us in the UK.

        • If a BTL post talking in such a bigoted tone about Jews were left up at the Guardian, CiFWatch would write an article highlighting it and complaining that the G. thus supports anti-Semitism.

        • Dear Paul, Israel let the Falachas in and they’ve become a vibrant part of our culture. Sadly you are unable to open your heart and see how beautiful it is to have Jews of all origins come to Israel, including some from Africa.

          • Aww, so poetic. Listen, why don´t you and your sock-puppets ariel-the-moron and hadara-the-turd join the Salvation Army?

          • Dear SerJew, why don´t you and your aliases Matzoh Maker and Commentary 101 learn to be polite and respect people who disagree with your views? Why do you go into attack mode on a personal level? Why not argue facts or just agree to disagree?

          • Why don’t you quit your insane hypocrisy and lie-spreading? And why do you keep posting here if you seem so unhappy with this blog? What a whiner.

      • So African immigrants in general need teaching about “civil behaviour”?

Not from the bigoted likes of Fritz.

        • I’m with you Pretzel. I find Paul and Fritz’s comments totally unacceptable. I will not defend the actions of racists, whether they be Arabs abusing Jews in the streets or Jews abusing Africans. Neither is acceptable.

          • I’m with you both on this one. There is a way of talking about absorption and integration into a host society without demeaning and degrading those from other cultures.

          • Agreed with pretzelberg and Labenal. Not with Jeff, though. The absorption narrative is in my opinion dangerously along the road to intolerance (though not necesarily so).

        • Pretz, I agree with you.
Though the case of migrants was brought in here to divert attention, the response is not only wrong but sadly reveals what many European and Western societies suffer from.
The scape goating game will forever continue.

        • Sure, I would not teach illegal Muslim Africans in Israel to behave in a way you obviously applaude to, as you put civil behaviour.in quotation marks. If you prefer theft, looting, robbery, rape, drug trade, human trade and mutilation there are a lot of places where you are welcome.

          • Fritz, your racism is appalling.

Most African migrants are people who fled persecution in their home country. All they want is to live in safety and protect their family from harm, just like any Israeli citizen. They’re not here to practice “theft, looting, robbery, rape, drug trade, human trade and mutilation”. There are more rapes committed by Israeli Jewish men than by African migrants in Israel.

          • Antisemites are of notorious limited intelligence, like Nuts.
As everybody can see I never wrote of “all” or “every”, which indeed would have been racist. It is just another proof of the hate and dangerous limitation of education which foster these Antisemites.
The events which led to the cited situation in Israel are deeply connected with exact this uncivilised behaviour of human trade, drug trade, rape etc. along the flight from Sudan and Somalia to Israel. Already under Mubarak the Egyptian police got orders to drive them to the Israelian borders, dissolving the camps around Cairo years ago. Otherwise gifted people like Nuts support these harassments, deportations and crimes in Egypt as they kept silent during that time.
Only now these antisemites come up with the issue, defending criminal behaviour.
That`s why i would like Adam or somebody else to get the clear names of such Antisemites like Nuts who are getting closer and closer to their Nazi model they admire.

          • Fritz, you did say this: “Understandably some Isrealis get upset when some of those try to behave like in Sudan, Somalia, …”
It is my understanding that you believe that uncivilised behaviour is acceptable in “Sudan, Somalia…”.
If this is not correct would you please clarify so we can stop this debate about off topic matters?

          • Fritz, racism is unbereable.

          • The only thing that keeps me going is to think that for every Fritz in Israel, there are ten Israelis who try to alleviate the human suffering of these migrants, in keeping with Jewish values.

For every Fritz who forgot that Jews were refugees for thousands of years, there are ten Israelis who’ve not forgotten the exhortation, ‘Remember the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt’.

          • @ItsikDeWembley
What is going on in Sudan and Somalia? Civil behaviour or criminal Islamist terror, civil war, robbery, rape and abduction?
The limited education of the Nuts, Sencar and their ilk is noteworthy as they think illegal migrants appear out of nowhere in Israel, without crossing borders. For years they gathered in camps around Cairo, till Mubarak decided to deport them to the Israelian border, and since then, see above.

          • But Fritz, surely not all African immigrants behave this way. It’s alright to talk of these social ills without branding every member of a community.

          • “Fritz, your racism is appalling.”

            “Nat,”
You’re racism is also, and always, appalling. You should keep your big mouth shut.

          • Fritz you are a demagogue. Can’t believe that Adam Levick hasn’t intervenedon this racism. Or actually, I can believe it, but still makes me sick.

          • As some are still complaining their own undereducation, the definition of racism is to claim for example that all of a nation, state, religion etc. are criminal or rapists or something alike.
I never wrote such garbage, but some undereducated just cannot differentiate between what is written and what they think is written, a basic difference for intelligent and educated people.

          • Fritz, why have thou closed your heart to Jewish values?

‘Remember the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt’.

          • Have you joined the Salvation Army, “nat”? What have you done to help the world´s refugees? Quit whining and accusing and go do something productive for them.

          • Nice, an Antisemite like Nuts wants to explain what Jewish values are. Normally you are used to think what a cynical person trying to harass Jews in every way he can. To my opinion he isn`t a cynic, just an otherwise gifted one. In Germany there are discussions whether Antisemitism is a form of mental insanity, for example feeling constantly harassed by Jews, or of dependency, like drug addicts or gamblers, an obsession to
Nuts can be described as a combination of both, feeling harassed but depending on our attention. Without the attention he could be in danger of trying suicide as only harassment remains as the centre of his life, so let´s do our human duty and save a life.

      • @ Sencar – this is well out of topic and clearly troling.
The matter was covered in length in CIF unlike the above matter.
The events leading to the 2 incidents are not comparable.
1 has to do with national outrage at the over flow of illegal migrants which are not being housed and as a result spill into South TA or Eilat causing a strain on the local systems. This raises the crime levels due to some migrants having to sleep rough and some having criminal past which they continue.

Like with any other country Israel is no different.

The case above is a case of racist hate crime which sadly the PA and Hamas govts not only ignore but in many cases condone or even fuel.

        Stop trolling.

        • itsik, Israel is a nation largely built by refugees who fled persecution in Europe. A real Israeli citizen neither insults, nor attacks African refugees who fled persecution in Africa. Trying to defend the nutcases who attack defenceless migrants is pitiful.

          • We don’t choose our citizens just like we don’t choose our famillies.
There are bad Israelis just like there are good ones.
I wouldn’t attack them, but then again I don’t live in an area wher my kids may suffer constant abuse from certain migrants.
I have no idea how I’d behave if I did and I doubt you, or Nick Clegg for that matter, do too.
People do stupid things when being pushed to the extreme.
Especially in the heat of the ME.
This has nothing to do with where my parents came or what country I live in.
            Do you disagree?
Israel is not largely built by European refugees.
Less then 40 percent of Israel has some sort of European blood in it.
Another 40 is from the ME and North Africa.
The remaining 20 is from Arab countries or have been born in the Ottoman area known as Palestina.
            But you knew this.

          • Oh, my…Liste, “nat”, join the Salvation Army or go yourself take care of refugees. But spare us your sanctimonious bullcrap.

        • Straw man alert! Straw man alert! Who said snowballs were WMDs?
Or, perhaps you are suggesting that Hamas rockets ARE WMDs?
          Interesting…

        • “nat!, can you please explain why you practice shameless trolling and sock-puppeteering? You can talk to ariel-the-moron and hadara-the-turd, if you need more insights.

          • Dear SerJew, why don´t you and your aliases Matzoh Maker and Commentary 101 learn to be polite and respect people who disagree with your views? Why do you go into attack mode on a personal level? Why not argue facts or just agree to disagree?

          • Under sock-puppet: hypocritical liars and trollers such as yourself don’t deserve respect. That’s democracy.

  4. How ironical – the ultra-orthodox being attacked are precisely Jews who oppose the existence of the state of Israel, and may even be from the lunatic fringe who went to Tehran to bask in the glow of Ahmadinajd’s appreciation.

What this really shows is the same sort of thing that one sees in the anti-Semitic cartons that populate the Arab media – the image of the Jew is usually of an orthodox Jew, note a short sleeved, tanned, young sabra. So these hoodlums are simply acting out what they see in their media – the Israeli as ultra-orthodox Jew.

Should I be surprised (well, not really) that Hilary, the EU and Harriet Sherwood (and Chris McGreal and Jon Donnison) have not rushed to the microphones and blogs to condemn this?

    • And how do you know that these two young men are affiliated with a haredi group that oppose the state of israel and may even be from a lunatic fringe (read: Neturei Karta) that went to Tehran? Maybe they are, but just remember that many Haredim dress in a similar fashion, and their religious views re: Israel, Zionism, etc., all differ somewhat.

Nobody else has brought this up, but beyond the obvious odiousness of the attackers and the mindset that they’re indoctrinated with, has anyone discussed why Haredim are seemingly incapable of trying to defend themselves? I’m not blaming the victim here, just pointing out the harsh realities of dealing with people that may want to do much worse to you than just throw snowballs.

I have this horrible image of a group of Haredi men sitting around, debating the fine points of the Talmud and in comes a group of cutthroats, armed with long knives. The Haredi are lined up, and one by one are decapitated. Those who are still studying continue to do so, and pray for the Almighty to rescue them, but do not attempt to fight off the attackers. Will there ever be some point in time where these Haredim will finally accept that self-defense is not an abomination?

    • Not all ultra-orthodox are Jews who oppose the existence of the state of Israel. There is a wealth of communities inside the ultra-orthodox world, who have different views on the world. Please do not insult people when you don’t even understand their culture.

      • Are you as sanctimonious about your practice of sock-puppeteering? I wonder what are the views of ariel-the-moron and hadara-the-turd.

        • Sorry to say this but your habit, SerJew, of writing the same thing about sock-puppets in response to every post by Nat is just as dull and unconstructive as Nat’s tendency to fixate on a phrase or quote and re-post it over and over on various threads. Please stop. Thanks.

    • My thought exactly re the location – but why should a Jew not be allowed to walk in the Arab area of old Jerusalem?

      Racism?

      • Damascus Gate is located in East Jerusalem, in the Palestinian side of the city. It’s walking distance for Haredims who live in Mea Sharim, in West Jerusalem, and they use it every day to access the Kotel.

    • Haredims walk into the Old City through Damacus Gate every day, including during Shabbat, and they’re perfectly fine. This is the Old City’s most popular gates after Jaffa gate, it’s always teeming with tourists.

  5. Strangely , I cannot get too upset by this .
The Charedi have no problem throwing stones at seculars , spitting at girls they consider inappropriately dressed or forcing women to sit at the back of buses which they are travelling on . Yet heads down they scurry away from the kids . The least they could have done was toss a few snowballs back preferably with rocks inside to even things up . They don’t even stop to remonstrate with their attackers . They are helpless babies and whoever believes they could ever be conscripted is deluded .
