Are Jews Still Persecuted in Britain Today? Richard Millett on 4ThoughtTV

The following is cross posted at Richard Millett‘s blog

(Editor’s note: Millett was asked to contribute to the following program due, in part, to his affiliation with CiF Watch.)

Tonight at 7.55pm (GMT) on Channel 4 I am in 4ThoughtTV’s slot on whether Jews are still persecuted in Britain today, which is the theme of the week.

There are seven contributions in all. Here is the link to mine and the other six:

1. I spoke about my experiences of harassment at anti-Israel events when I have merely tried to get Israel’s point of view across.

2. Stephen Sizer is an anti-Israel/anti-Zionist Christian Minister. I once went to hear him speak at a Palestine Solidarity Campaign event held in a church. He said, inter alia, that churches that side with Israel have “repudiated Jesus, have repudiated the bible and are an abomination”. On my way out of that meeting I was accosted by an audience member who let out some of the most Holocaust denying anti-Jewish vitriol I have ever heard. She told me, inter alia, that Jews died in the Holocaust from having “had their foreskins chopped off.”

In his 4Thought clip Sizer claims it’s important to be able to criticise certain Israeli policies without being accused of anti-Semitism. Let’s be clear: criticising Israel’s policies is legitimate, just like it is legitimate to criticise the policies of any country.

Sizer and his ilk are accused of anti-Semitism because they want the world’s only Jewish state to disappear. This is completely different to criticising Israel’s policies. Instead, they single out the Jewish state, the collective Jew, for destruction. So, Sizer is being highly disingenuous. If he were truthful he would have admitted he wants the Jewish state removed.

3. Another who wants the Jewish state removed is Ahron Cohen, of the extremist religious Jewish sect the Neturei Karta which believes that Jews should only go to the Holy Land once they have received a direct order from God to do so. The Neturei Karta also embraces Iran’s Holocaust denying President Ahmadinejad who repeatedly calls for the destruction of Israel. Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei has referred to Israel as “the Zionist cancerous tumour in the heart of the Islamic world”.

In his clip, Cohen blames Palestinian terrorism “on the very existence of the sectarian state known as Israel”.

4. Mike Marcus has also fallen for the myth that “The Zionist lobby uses the label of anti-Semitism to silence their critics”.

5. Jose Martin correctly blames the media for whipping up anti-Semitism due to its unfair reportage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

6. Yisrael Abeles, a Holocaust survivor, also blames the media for driving much of what has, these days, become “institutionalised anti-Semitism” as opposed to street anti-Semitism.

7. The most moving clip is by schoolgirl Eden Simones-Jones who says that she still suffers from depression and anxiety due to anti-Semitic harassment. She finishes:

“If people say there is no problem with anti-Semitism, I think they should wake-up, open their eyes and really look about what’s going out there because they’re obviously sheltered in their own little dreamland where everything’s rosy, because anti-Semitism’s everywhere. You’ve just got to know what to look for.”

Sadly, she’s right. Anti-Semitism is everywhere. In Britain today anti-Zionism, an attack on Israel as the collective Jew, is the modern updated version of anti-Semitism, the attack on Jews as individuals. “Anti-Zionism” is a label that has been adopted by many of Britain’s  academics, journalists, politicians, religious leaders and charities to hide their true feelings about Jews. This is the “institutionalised anti-Semitism” referred to by Yisrael Abeles.

  1. I was thinking about how to characterise this post. I think I can only describe it as a cry for help from someone addicted to victimhood.

Most readers of CiFWatch are so well trained that the perverse contradictions will be completely invisible to them.

Richard dishonestly dismisses the well known abuse of anti-Semitism to shield Israel from criticism, then immediately states that it is anti-Semitic to not support the existence of a Jewish state. Just to be clear, anyone who supports a one-state solution (including Likud) are in this boat. Richard also uses brain dead terms like the “collective Jew”. Seriously.

I seldom see such desperate attempts to conflate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism – demonstrating exactly what he dismisses as a myth.

    • @ Avram I know how to characterize your post none so blind as those that can’t see and deaf to reason. Many have had anti Semitic experiences my family suffered greatly from it before there ever was a State of Israel and certainly many times since.

Richard is not being dishonest with regard to his defense of Israel you wouldn’t know what happens to those who adopt a pro Zionist stand how could you? If you don’t like the term ‘collective Jew’ what about Jew Country or you might prefer Jew Boy or Yiddo both shouted at us from passing cars in the leafy suburb where i live?

      • Do you honestly believe that shouts of ‘Jewboy’ or ‘Yiddo’ from a passing car,are motivated by anti-Zionist perceptions? What your describing is good ‘old-fashioned’ racism. Anyone with their eyes wide open would agree that there is still plenty of it about.
It affects Africans,West indiansAsians,Jews ,Irish and Muslims.
It takes different forms and is not always easy to spot. But it is there and it should be condemned without distinction.
However,it is a mistake to automatically assume that someone who disagrees with Zionism is antisemitic.

        • I notice you left the word good outside your quotation marks. Freudian slip?
Having fun misrepresenting the views of others again?

      • First of all, I will treat your comment with respect as you are in the tiny minority of posters here who are prepared to have their real name associated with what they write. Most are so ashamed of their ignorant bigotry that they cower behind pseudonyms.

Racism exists in the UK, this is an undeniable fact. And within the ranks of the anti-Zionists, anti-Jewish racists are over-represented. This should not be surprising. For example, anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racists are dramatically over-represented in the pro-Israel ranks. Again, this should not be surprising.

But it is simply a logical fallacy to conflate anti-Zionism and anti-Jewish racism. Just as it is a logical fallacy to equate support for Israel with anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racism.

Perversely, most of the anti-Jewish racism I’ve ever experienced has come from Jewish supporters of Israel, who have often described me as a “self-hating-Jew” (in spite of not actually considering myself to be Jewish) – their bigotry extends to the point where Jews are not allowed to venture beyond the clearly defined borders of acceptable thought.

I’ve read the likes of Richard and Adam for a good while. Dishonesty is their game. They see anti-Semitism everywhere. They use this phantom menace to distract people from Israel’s crimes. When the Guardian reports on international outcry of Israel’s accelerating programs of land theft and colonisation, Adam will typically, and dishonestly write about opposition to “Jews building homes”. This is the dishonesty that ultimately hurts Israel.

    • Avram, you show yourself entirely for what you are. I held my nose and went to your blog and found the sort of malignant narcissism I have come to expect from people who write with such certainty, certainty they have no right to appropriate.

You are an overweeningly arrogrant little schmuck who is probably unreachable by therapy – I wouldn’t take you on until you evidenced some insight that you might possibly be wrong about what you write in your blog at least.

There is also evidence in your post above of unresolved Oedipal rage, which you direct at Richard and probably at others in authority.

How DID you get on with your father?

      • I think you need to take some anger management courses.
Failing that a trip to your GP may help, provided the correct course of treatment is prescribed.
        Keep taking the tablets!

        • “I think you need to take some anger management courses.”

I never see groups of people more in need of anger management than those who show up at anti-Israel rallies. The vitriol is hard to fathom. Where does such vitriol come from? I suppose it must be from some intellectually advanced disagreement with some policy or other. Sure.

          • It’s a long tradition, ya know: Josef Mengele, Aribert Heim, Eduard Wirth, Viktor, Brack, etc, etc, etc.

    • “Let’s be clear: criticising Israel’s policies is legitimate, just like it is legitimate to criticise the policies of any country.”

I thin we can all agree with Richard Millet on this.

    • “Let’s be clear: criticising Israel’s policies is legitimate, just like it is legitimate to criticise the policies of any country.”

I thin we can all agree with Richard Millet on this.

      • Criticising policy is OK . Criticising existence, Nat, and being insulting in the process as so many are, is very wrong.
By the way when is HMG paying the redskins and aborigines for their lands? Meanwhile do yourselves the credit of re-reading the sources I pointed to. “Time spent on intelligence is seldom wasted.”

  2. Europeans imbibe anti-Senitism with their other’s milk. The world’s 13m Jews should simply boycott Europe completely . Lech lecha – get out to the USA, Israel, Canada, or other civilised country.

  3. The problem for the anti-Zionists is they are so early 19th century – as in the unification of Italy that Metternich put down as, “a geographical expression,” and Germany. Zionism was the tail end of 19th century European nationalism that broke the multi-ethnic empires of the Habsburgs, Ottomans, Hohenzollerns and Romanovs, and then broke the maritime empires when the World Wars had bankrupted them.

If you criticise Italy, Germany or any other “successor state” eg the Irish you are “on side” until you suggest the place has no rights to exist as an independent state. Then you sin against the Holy Ghost of national self-determination infringing on the rights of the Irish to be Irish inclusive their relationship with the RC Church, whether in Ireland or their diaspora, ditto Armenians who are also religiously identified. you have to be Armenian born to be an Armenian priest. Similarly of Jews in Israel or Diaspora.

It is for Jews, NOT Sizer nor the PLO and less so Hamas or Hizbollah to accept or reject and otherwise juggle the several aspects of their identities. This is why Rev Sizer and most of the Palestine lobby get flak is because they spitefully presume to over-ride Jewish self-determinations as a nation and nation state. The Jewish religion actually qualifies and determines the Jews as a nation as much as a religion: re- read the “Eighteen Benedictions that, with Shema, are the core of the three daily services! Besides the anti-Zionists accept the PLO /PA Arab self determination as principally [Sunni] Moslems opening their Covenant with the specifically Moslem invocation, “In the name of Allah the merciful and compassionate…” Then there is the Arab Spring pushing Islam as a rebellion against the modern World’s liberalism and free thinking and innovation to take the drudgery out of life – quite apart from the mildly ridiculous phenomenon of a pretension to anti – imperialism adhering rigidly to a British imperial map of their geographical determination!

    • Interesting post but too many sins of omision and some of your wires are crossed. Too much of the’ heart ruling the head’.

Palestine shouts about ethnic cleansing to hide that ethnic cleansing has always been the Arab programme in Palestine and Sizer is blind because Arab Moslems are succeeding in pushing out the Christians of the Arab World -precisely because they do not have a majority state of their own.
