H/T Margie and Chas
Say you’re the Israel correspondent for an increasingly irrelevant, ideologically driven, UK broadsheet.
And, you’ve noticed that, though you continually strive to maintain a veneer of respectable journalism, when offered the opportunity to comment beneath your anti-Zionist polemics, your readers typically unleash a fury of off-topic vitriol against Jews.
What are you to do?
Well, you begin by not allowing comments beneath your posts. And, then you attempt to soften your image by introducing an “apolitical” blog, focused on Israeli human interest stories which are sure to prevent the kind of shrill, obnoxious, uninformed Judeophobic remarks which are injurious to your liberal street cred.
But, tragically, you notice that folks who look at your newspaper for moral guidance in this maddeningly complicated Zionist universe we live in simply aren’t interested in attempts to humanize Israelis, and the paucity of comments are quite embarrassing.
So, what are you now to do to generate interest?
The surest way to garner page views? Well, of course! Write a story about a few religiously extreme Israelis who hold morally indefensible views about young girls, women, and immodesty, and hysterically frame those marginal few as representing nothing short of a battle for Israel’s very soul. (The battle of Bet Shemesh, Guardian, Oct. 31)
Sure enough, the regular band of Judeo-obsessed Guardian sycophants pounce at the first sign of such a Zionist straw man, and begin to name and shame those on the thread who would defend the indefensible. Except that, well, nobody on the thread actually defended the antagonists in Sherwood’s tale.
But, no worry mate. This isn’t the impassable rhetorical obstacle it appears to be, as the following Guardian reader, using the moniker “FrankyValley”, cleverly demonstrates:
Jews on these threads? Defending perverts?
A heterodox CiF commenter, “HushedSilence”, then inquired:
But, undeterred, Mr. Valley would not back down:
Finally, the following, by “Pretzelberg” – sounds Jewish to me! – asked:
Indeed. While I’m no computer nerd, I’ve been using the internet long enough to realize that if you hover your cursor in just the right location near a moniker on a CiF comment thread there quickly appears the universal avatar for all Jews, their apologists, and general Zionist/Hasbara/CiF Watch trolls.

Love the troll pic Adam. I’m sure that he has a much healthier home-life than ‘FrankieValley’ who sounds so hate-filled that it must be hard for him to stand up straight.
About him I’d say scum, mate, scum
And the real Frankie Valli http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzpWKAGvGdA

I enjoyed this immensely – I always enjoy showing up leftist racism and hypocrisy. Well done, lad.

Great stuff. But as the ideologically driven Guardian becomes increasingly irrelevant, does this make the ideologically CW increasingly irrelevant, too?

Tony,
Thanks for your comment.
But, to be serious for a second: the only unifying ideology of our quite politically diverse CW community is Zionism and opposition to antisemitism. As I’ve noted about CWers (from “all over the world”), we have different faiths, some are secular and others more religious, and truly represent both the left and right.

You must have missed this one from someone called…..cocoapony 1 Nov 9AM……………………
“An religious apartheid state sleepwalking into a state of aggressive fundamentalist intolerance.Hardly a surprise”……
It got 137 recommendations,it’s still standing……Despite numerous reports of abuse the Guardian refused to delete that post…………

Harriet Sherwood is dumb, she knows nothing about Israel that some palestinian hasn’t told her……….
She writes that “women joggers were spat at and abused”
And in London women joggers are not mugged raped and abused, though HS shouldn’t need to worry about getting raped.
She got quite a hammering on that thread……..

The Guardian – a British newspaper is very busy reporting religious extremism in Beit Shemesh – thousands of miles from London and the same time keeps a very telling silence on the events regarding violent attacks and threats against a MP in a London mosque. Looking at their priorities it is very easy to identify the anti-sem… sorry anti-Zionist nature of the leading liberal voice.

I thought it very obvious how Harriet was blowing this one incident out of all proportion (as representative of religious life or civil society in Israel:’look , they are an evil tehocracy’) while blatantly ignoring the true religious extrimism by Islamist groups in Gaya, or closer to home, in Britain on a daily basis. Bloody hypocrite, she is.
And that commenter FrankValley, with ‘Jew-detecting antennae’ (attached to his tin foil hat, probably), made the Guaridan look like the true heir to the Stuemer, once again. I always wonder under what stone those types come crawling out from.

Apologize for the typos, I am tired (it’s ‘Gaza’, ‘theocracy’ etc.).

Look, I love Israel, and I in no way defend FrankyValley or his ilk but we mustn’t shy away from the fact that bad things do occur there. I have friends with daughters at that school, and it is horrendous what they face there on a daily basis. I would say that it is a reasonable thing for a report, and by Harriet’s standards, it is relatively balanced, with plenty of comment from Israelis who abhor this behaviour. My impression on reading the Guardian article is that the general view in Israel is that this is undesirable and nasty and that it ought not to be tolerated – a fairly accurate reflection of what I percieve to be the view of the wider Israeli public (if there ever can be “the” view of the wider Israeli public).
In other words, while I share your loathing of the tone of the comments made below the line, and detest the fact that this incident gives the haters a stick to beat Israel and Jews with, I don’t think it’s fair in this instance to criticize Sherwood for writing about it.
