To contextualize Alice Walker’s explanation for participating in the “Freedom Flotilla II” (Alice Walker: Why I’m joining the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, Guardian, June 25) you need to read her moral reasoning here:
“I feel that the Israel that many Jews dreamed of having – that one is gone. That’s demolished. I think it’s time for people to accept that. Because what you have now is something that is so frightening. Israel is as frightening to many of us as Germany used to be.”
To equate the democratic Jewish state with Nazi Germany is more than stupid, its unimaginably cruel – a simply grotesque moral inversion of the worst order.
If Walker was part of a left who was loyal to liberal principles, who swore allegiance not to the post-colonialism of fools, nor the anti-imperialism of idiots, but, rather, to a progressive politics which took seriously moral distinctions between flawed liberal democracies and reactionary Islamic fundamentalism, she would have long ago been denounced as a hypocrite of the first order, someone ill-suited to the cause to which she claimed allegiance.
Asking Israel to defend itself from charges that it is like the Nazis who exterminated 6 million Jews is as reasonable as asking America to defend itself from charges, from Iran, that it is the “Great Satan”. That is, nobody who’s morally or intellectually serious would deem such a hateful and grotesque invective as worth of a reply.
Walker explains that the boat she’s riding to Gaza, The Audacity of Hope, is “carrying letters to the people of Gaza. Letters expressing solidarity and love.”
She further, quite audaciously – and comically in the context of the violent, anti-Semitic, and fanatically illiberal Hamas regime she’s providing moral succor – conjures Ghandi and, covering her liberal Jewish flank, even has the gall to summon the moral example of “ the Jewish civil rights activists who faced death to come to the side of black people in the American south in our time of need”.
As a Jew, I don’t require Walker’s sanctimony; as a morally sober student of the civil rights movement, I’m simply aghast at the attempt to equate the quite moral struggles of African-Americans in the 50s and 60s with Hamas’ explicit genocidal designs on the Jewish state. Walker demeans the movement to which she claims authority. Ismail Haniyeh as Martin Luther King mocks the latter and grotesquely elevates the former.
Walker, schooled in the art of compassion, liberalism, and liberation evidently fails to note that the regime she’s providing succor is beyond illiberal, is more than merely regressive. Indeed, Hamas, the movement which runs Gaza, which imports arms from Iran, and which fires rockets at Israeli schoolchildren, resembles – indeed, wildly exceeds – the racist fervor of the ”‘good ol’ boys’ of Neshoba County”, the racists of Mississippi, Bull Conner, and Jim Crow.
Walker’s liberalism is a liberalism turned, morally, upside down.
She’s evidently blind to the explicit classical anti-Semitism of Hamas’ founding charter, which quotes directly from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ to “prove” that Jews are indeed trying to take over the world, unaware of their radical misogyny or their homophobia and religious supremacy.
Nick Cohen’s book, “What’s Left?”, dissects, with laser precision, the radical left’s moral blind spots, their tendency to overlook, in the name of multiculturalism!, the sins of “dark-skinned” despots, and obsess over the sins of the democratic West.
If there was a decent left, a left which elevated liberal principle over moral posturing, Alice Walker would be derided as the political traitor she is and excommunicated from the moral community she dares to claim allegiance.
Let it be known that the cognitive war against the right of the Jewish state to live is being waged in the name of liberalism and civil rights – reactionary anti-Zionism in the name of progressive politics.
“Audacious” doesn’t begin to describe it.

Howard Jacobson: Why Alice Walker shouldn’t sail to Gaza
http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2011/OPINION/06/24/howard.jacobson.flotilla/story.howard.jacobson.jpg
“It should not need arguing, this late in the ethical history of mankind, that good people can do great harm. One of the finest and funniest novels ever written — Don Quixote — charts the damage left in the wake of a man who would make the world a better place.
Human beings are seldom more dangerous than when they are sentimentally overcome by the goodness of their own intentions. That Alice Walker believes it is right to join the Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza I do not have the slightest doubt. But beyond associating her decision with Gandhi, Martin Luther King and very nearly, when she talks about the preciousness of children, Jesus Christ, she fails to give a single convincing reason for it.”

Simply outstanding post–true, true and true! I actually now think Glenn Beck, far from being “crazy” as the NYTimes tried to label him, has it right when he says that modern day liberalism is a mental disorder.
And has serious consequences…

What Alice Walker feels (and she makes the classic mistake of the ignorant when she confuses what she thinks with what she believes – a subtle difference but nonetheless important), that the Israel many Jews dreamed of having is gone, is besides the point.
As I have said, she is making the classic mistake of the ignorant emoter, as well as confusing what she alone thinks with what Jews/Israelis believe. Who is she, for goodness’ sake, that we should be at all interested in or place any importance on what she “feels”?
I don’t think that this evidences a failure of moral reasoning – I believe that it shows that this benighted woman is incapable of reasoning at all. One cannot emote and reason at the same time!

Fascinating.
Somewhere I cam across an article where it appears that her hatred of Jews derives from having married a Jew (and then, perhaps, having this daughter she so objected to?).
She recounts meeting some Arab woman who says to her soemthing like “Beware of the Jews” and Walker replies “too bad – I already made that mistake and married one”.
Her “goodness’ is actually nothing more than anti-Semitsm dressed up as sympathy for Gaza.
Sad really – this icon has such feet of clay.

AKUS, Walker is typical of so many who try to fool themselves and us that their OTT hatred of Israel, which must almost consume them, is really not that they hate Jews.
There’s a really simple rule of thumb, as I am sure you are aware, and it comes from the ease with which haters conflate “Israel” and what Israel allegedly and otherwise does wrong, with its essentially Jewish nature.
Israel’s benighted Arab/Muslim neighbours rarely make the distinction between the two and in their sick overidentification with alleged “oppression” of Palestinians by Israel, neither do benighted Palestine supporters.
Walker would be worth a PhD thesis in her own right.

In light of her daughter’s article, the hypocrisy of Wlaker’s article in the Guardian is even more stunning when she wrote:
“As adults, we must affirm, constantly, that the Arab child, the Muslim child, the Palestinian child, the African child, the Jewish child, the Christian child, the American child, the Chinese child, the Israeli child, the Native American child, etc, is equal to all others on the planet. We must do everything in our power to cease the behaviour that makes children everywhere feel afraid.”
But not her own child … amazing how her treatment of her own daughter could have been part of “The Color Purple”.

“since learning of the attack by armed Israeli commandos on defenseless peace activists carrying aid to Gaza who tried to fend them off using chairs and sticks. I am thankful to know what it means to be good; I know that the people of the Freedom Flotilla are/were in some cases, some of the best people on earth. You are either incredibly stupid or just somehow corrupted by the mindless hostility from the Islamofascist/Leftist coalition which thinks for example, that although regimes in the Mideast are daily murdering literally thousands of their own citizens, you want to try to organize a pathetic “flotilla” to bring supplies to those with the highest standard of living in the otherwise wretched Arab world, the Gazans.
The truth of the previous (failed) “flotilla” is now well known–the morons on board the ship, which was trying to run a well-established weapons naval blockade, attacked the Israeli soldiers, who initially responded non-violently with paint guns. Only after some of these stupid buttwipes on this ridiculous “mission” tried charming tricks like attempting to throw Israelis overboard, did they open fire.
Instead of vainly trying to make up nonsense about the mideast’s only democracy and indeed tolerant inclusive and genuinely peace-seeking Israel, I have an idea for you: Organize a “flotilla” to “rescue” some of the thousands of victims from say, Syria and its murderous rulers.
I’d be very interested in the outcome of this “humanitarian” mission.
Get a life.

Reading the articles and the tweets about the flotilla summer cruise I keep wondering why the facts about Gaza and Hamas keep escaping the participants.
Even if the welfare of Israeli civilians is somehow not relevant to their lives, and we can understand that, can’t we, how did Alice Walker and Mya Guarnieri dupe themselves into giving their support for a regime that jails women for laughing in public?
June 26, 2011 at 4:35 am
Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs
You are absolutely correct in saying that the facts about Gaza (and the flotillas to Gaza) keep escaping not only the participants but the majority of the public.
As Ambassador Alan Baker states in his latest piece on the flotillas to come, “Hamas routinely fires missiles randomly at Israeli civilian targets. Thus a situation of ongoing armed conflict exists between Hamas and Israel, which has the prerogative to institute a naval and land blockade to prevent the introduction of weapons and materials that could serve belligerent purposes.”

Alice Walker is frightened by a country that reminds her of Nazi Germany, but it’s not Iran, the first country since the Second World War to have a foreign policy officially geared to the physical destruction of the Jewish people, which welcomes every anti-Semite under the sun to its holocaust denial circus, that persecutes and executes gay people. Obviously these are not qualifications that give the impression of the Germany of old. No, when it comes to universal and unqualified evil, look no further than the Jews.
She wants to take the moral high-ground and draw parallels between the self-serving hypocrisy of the false heroes on the flotilla and the just struggle of the civil rights movement in the USA, but she doesn’t condemn Iran or take a stand against Ahmadinejad when David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan is a guest of honour in Tehran. Maybe the Grand Wizard will even have a seat next to Alice on their voyage to Gaza. What a wonderful world of peace, love and progress we live in.

Undoubtedly the single biggest political mystery of my entire fairly long lifetime is the embrace of the Islamofascists by American and other “global leftists”. If you ask liberals what’s important to them (actually know the answers as a recovering member of that ilk!), they invariably cite tolerance, inclusiveness, fair treatment of all others esp. women and minorities, eschewing violence, emphasis on learning and education, etc.
The charming jihadists with whom the Left has largely but inexplicably aligned itself persecute in their own lands any who practice another religion, systematically abuse women and children, literally execute gays (have seen the revolting hanging videos from Teheran), and regularly murder many thousands of innocent civilians for any of a number of inscrutable reasons.
So why in the world the Lefties have chosen to side with these primitive uncivilized types against democratic, tolerant, inclusive and truly peace-seeking Israel, is beyond my ability to comprehend. Perhaps someone smarter than I can explain it to me.
