Chilling applause line at J St. Conference (Hatred of Israel as “progressive” Jewish politics)

H/T Israel Matzav

If you want to get a glimpse into the mind of many who align themselves with the group J Street, go to the 4:40 mark of this video and listen to the applause during journalist Mona Eltahawy’s chilling justification of Egyptians’ hatred of Israel.

Please keep in mind while watching this that, per a 2010 Pew Global Survey, anti-Semitism (no not merely Israel hatred) is nearly universal in Egyptian society, with a staggering 95% of those surveyed expressing animosity towards Jews.

That a journalist would fan the flames of hatred even further is bad enough, but please remember that Ms. Eltahawy’s remarks, and subsequent applause – simply dripping with contempt for the Jewish state – took place at a major conference for an organization which describes itself as pro-Israel.

I’d like someone to explain to me why, during the course of Eltahawy’s diatribe against Israel, there doesn’t appear to have been even one hoot, jeer, or protest from this progressive and supposedly independent thinking crowd.

(Update: Seth Mandel, at NewsRealBlog, has a great take on the J. Street crowd’s roaring approval for Eltahawy’s anti-Israel diatribe, here.)

  1. How on earth does this ghastly woman think “Israel supported Hosni Mubarak”?

Another example of the supernatural powers Arabs ascribe to Israelis and Jews.

Perhaps its better that way. Save a lot of shooting.

  2. she clearly states that israel not only supported mubarak (sorry, not by choice) but every arab dictator in the region….and that is how they stayed in power

how dare she justify the hate arabs have for the jew

whatever…she is no journalist….just another so-called moderate muslim…and as there is really no such thing…she is gonna make someone a wonderful mutah wife….may it happen soon

  3. Doesn’t the sycophantic introduction of a seasoned Israel hater at a supposedly pro-Israel convention, say it all?

Just like Britain’s foreign secretary who qualifies his remarks as a “friend of Israel”, then proceeds to undermine her very existence, so too is it with JStreet.

Ghastly, she certainly is, but she does a great and convincing job of painting the “poor, downtrodden Palestinians” as the victims, and the Israelis as the abusers.

Pity that on our side, there is a dearth of eloquent, self confident speakers willing to put the case for Israel, with the same passion and conviction.

  4. If Israel ceased to exist 95% of Egyptians would hate Jews. If Jews ceased to exist 95% of Egyptians would hate Jews.

  5. Calling for peace in the region = hatred of Israel?? If you consider yourself a “friend” of Israel, and if Israel has a lot of friends like you, then Israel will not survive into the next century unless it turns into a fascist state.

You are not a friend of Israel, you schmuck.

    Long Live JStreet!

  6. Eli:

Do you consider yourself representative of those in attendance at JStreet?

Tell me what do you think of BDS?

  7. Eli, you apparently are unaware that there are several Peace organiztions in Israel. A prominent one is called “Peace Now” or Gush Shalom.

Where is a sister organization in an Arab entity called “Salaam Now”?

There is another group calling itself “Jewish Voice for Peace”.

Where is “Muslim Voice For Peace”? A Muslim group that opposes firing rockets into Israel. That opposes describing Jews as sons of pigs and monkeys?

Where are the “Anti-War” groups that demonstrate against al qada, osama bin lade?

With “friends” like Jihad Street, who needs enemies?

  8. Infidel:
I just love your philosophy of life:
    – I condemn the other side
    – I am better than the other side
    BUT
    – what I do is OK because the other side does it.

But Israel had another very successful day yesterday: it managed to avoid any negotiations. And Bibi is working hard on finding ways to expand the settlements:
“”We can bang our heads against the wall, but that’s not what I’m doing. There is construction in Judea and Samaria. It’s true that there are no bids in several places, and this is being looked into. We are currently making efforts to maintain the existing construction.” (from YNet)
Maybe statements like these are the reason that so many educated and involved pro-Israel American Jews, the future leaders of the community, are flocking to join J-Street.

But why should you consider the reasons for this “problem” when you can solve it in a mature manner simply by saying things like “Jihad-Street” ?

  9. Jonathan Hoffman:

Are you serious ? Did you actually read the ‘newsrealblog’ article? Eltahawy is criticized for saying:

“it’s time for the revolution–for freedom and dignity of Palestinians. And if you make that call, I will be there I will be marching with each and every single one of you peacefully, nonviolently, for the freedom and dignity of Palestinians.”

i.e. a ‘revolution’ in the attitudes of Israelis towards the Palestinians. That’s really terrible, isn’t it ? And did you notice those two little innocuous words near the end – “peacefully”, “nonviolently”. Is that a call for a violent overthrow of the government ? But there is one phrase of absolute heresy that is no doubt the reason for the author’s condemnation: “dignity of Palestinians”.

No wonder that so many young, intelligent, educated and informed Jews are flocking to J-Street.

  10. MindOfCrap, THANK YOU for proving my point.

There are no Muslim Peace groups, counterparts to Israel Peace groups.

Now please tell us WHY there are no Muslim Peace groups.

Tell us why “progressive” groups do not demonstrate against hamass and hezbullah?

  11. BTW MindOfCrap, as you see, at CiFWatch, you are not able to depend on your islamofascist-philic (we are all hezbullah/al qada) friends to delete pro-Israel, anti-islamofascist commentary as you do at the racist Der Guardian.

  12. T-G-I-A-F:

“There are no Muslim Peace groups, counterparts to Israel Peace groups.
Now please tell us WHY there are no Muslim Peace groups.”

Because Israeli is a democratic country. However, you and many others think that “Peace groups” are a subversive factor and support the legal persecution of anyone one that dares to disagree with government policy in “the only democracy in the Middle East”. Refer to my comment above about your “philosophy”, which you persist in proving is correct, i.e. Israelis want peace, but should suppress anyone who works for peace, and that is OK because the Arabs do it.

    Brilliant !

  13. MIndOfCrap, FAKE “Peace Groups” like FAKE “anti-war groups” which do not demand of BOTH SIDES of what they deman of ONE SIDE, clearly have an agenda that belies their claims of “peace” and “anti-war”.

I ask you again, what Muslim Peace group demonstrates against islamist groups in the UK which have openly threatened the UK with 9/11 style attacks?

And if there is a REAL Muslim Peace group, would they be threated with death based on a fatwa from a Muslim religious authority as write Salman Rushdie was, or as an apostate would be?

  14. Well done on the twitter work.
You are providing a sane voice in a sea of idiots. Although it may seem that you’re (almost) alone in your condemnation of Jewish Israel-bashers, you are not. There are many passive readers who need to hear your voice.
    Keep it up.

  15. t-g-i-a-i:
    “FAKE “Peace Groups” …….
Sorry, I forgot that they are all “political and moral amateurs”, and obviously anyone who strives for disgusting values like “peace” must be fake ….

“And if there is a REAL Muslim Peace group, would they be threated with death based on a fatwa from a Muslim religious authority as write Salman Rushdie was, or as an apostate would be?”

Are you aware of the “death threats” continuously aimed at public figures in Israel ? which side of the political spectrum do they belong to ?

But that’s OK, because the Arabs that you condemn do the same thing.

  16. MindOfCrap – “and obviously anyone who strives for disgusting values like “peace” must be fake ”

They ARE FAKE if they don’t demand of hamass, hezbullah, islamfascist regime of iran what they demand of the US and Israel.

And please show us any pictures of British Jews threatening the UK with 9/11 style death and destruction as British MUSLIMS have threatened the UK.

  17. MindOfCrap, as you probably know, your home at Der Guardians CiF (censoship is free) would probably delete a comment that links to pictures of British Muslims threatening the UK with death and destruction.

That is why CiFWatch is an important voice, an antidote to the racist, fascist Der Guardian. Over time, CifWatch will attain higher visibility and hopefully Der Guardian will be shamed into reform.

  18. t-g-i-a-i:

“And please show us any pictures of British Jews threatening the UK with 9/11 style death and destruction as British MUSLIMS have threatened the UK.”

Oh, but they are worse ! They are infiltrating Parliament (according to Channel 4).

  19. “Oh, but they are worse ! They are infiltrating Parliament (according to Channel 4).”

And so what? How many Jews in Britain? 300k? Out of 60 million people?

I don’t see waves of Jewish protests, I see millions of muslims marching in London against discrimination. Jews aren’t a threat. Imagine a Britain without Jews…half your technology would be gone. Hopefully sent to Israel where the Jews truly belong, not contributing to nations that deny Jewish rights yet have no problem profiting from their gifts.

  20. The Mona Eltahawy remarks are unbelievable.

At least she admits Egyptians ‘continue’ to hate Israelis i.e. they have hated Israeli Jews ab initio, like they they hated the Egyptian Jews they drove out. Or hated the Palestinian Jews they and their armies hope to conquer, expel or eliminate in 1948.

As you say, it is unbelievable she was unchallenged by JStreeters, which shows how much of a liability to Israel it really is.

I which Dennis Ross had stayed to challenge some of that, though.

Oh, MTC, you are a complete fucking asshole. Etahawy’s comments are either wholly inadequate or completely indefensible. She does not remotely address the inveterate Egyptian hatred of Jews, Palestinian, Israeli or other.

And you are just another fucking apologist for it.

You may be Right On, and with the Zeitgeist. But sooner or later, among Jews, you are gonna get your head kicked in.

  21. Schneb:

“Oh, MTC, you are a complete fucking asshole. Etahawy’s comments are either wholly inadequate or completely indefensible. She does not remotely address the inveterate Egyptian hatred of Jews, Palestinian, Israeli or other.”

I know – she is a “moral and political amateur” (the list is getting longer).

  22. MTC, you are a complete reptile.

Etahawy to Israelis: We Egyptians will continue to hate you so long as etc?

As if there was ever a time they didn’t?

No I begin to understand what it must have felt to be a Jew for most of the last 2000 years. The world, it seems, is programed to hate you. The organs of state, church or mosque fuel the masses hatred or contempt for you.

And you are powerless to change the narrative. All you can do is bunch together, for self-defence, help and support, as best you can.

In which case they will seek to put an end to that too, as they did the last time.

There’s no point pretending the future’s bright.

  23. ‘I know – she is a “moral and political amateur” (the list is getting longer).’

She’s no amateur. When she says We Egyptians will continue to hate Israelis she knows exactly what she is doing, and who she’s pleasing thereby.

Including you, you unspeakable fascist creep.

  24. And who says the list is getting shorter? If you bother to read me, I say exactly the opposite.

But I’m just a Jew. You can put in my mouth whatever you want. Without consequence. Free of charge.

Except for the day I decide to blow your head off.

  25. Schneb

“Except for the day I decide to blow your head off.”

A mature response to a serious argument …….

  26. I like the way Mona Eltahawy is dressed at the Jihad Street rally.

You think she dresses that way back in Egypt?

    LOL!

    Not like Yvonne Ridley?

Plus Mona proves the belief of non-brainwashed drones that the peace between Israel and Egypt hangs by a thread – that a regime change to a peace-hating islamist government will spell doom to “peace”.

  27. Cilliancappa, good points.

Suppose that from now on the Jews of the West withdrew their support and goodwill and contributions to research and technology from any government which refused to act robustly against antisemitism. They could just do it, without open letters or fanfares. It’d be difficult to do – not least because of the loony left-inclined and other Jews, (although they contribute precious little) whose attitude would work against it, but how might it work and do people believe it might work?

“Calling for peace in the region = hatred of Israel??”

No, but the way people such as JStreet call for it is disingengenuous and lazy.
Disingenuous, because the conditions they demand of Israel inevitably would lead to her demise as a Jewish state, and lazy, because it’s easier to successfully demand concessions of Israel than her adversaries.
The enemies of Israel have never conceded one iota in all of history.
Read Judea Perle’s masterly analysis in his classic piece “Dialogue of the Deaf”.

As for the intentions of the likes of Mona Eltahawy, her eloquence and passion cannot hide her true agenda, which is that of the mainstream Arab world, namely the removal of Israel from the ME. When she talks of peace, she means surrender (of Israel).

Shame on you that you are fooled by her!

  30. @everyone

Woo! It’s really hard to weed through this muckety muck of a conversation, but here’s a question:

-Just took a look at the Pew survey that Adam cited. Certainly very troubling. I was interested, though, in the stat that “only 35% of Israeli Arabs expressed a negative opinion” of Jews, which is high, but stands in marked contrast to the more than 90% of Egyptians, Jordanians, Lebanese, and Palestinians that hold negative opinions of Jews. What do you all think of this?

Also, I was at the JStreet conference, support JStreet and really do consider myself Pro-Israel! Do any of you want to know how I manage to live in such a place of apparent contradiction? I’m guessing not, but would be happy to share if so.
