Fact: two Israeli citizens have been arrested on suspicion of making ‘contact with an enemy agent’, specifically Hizbollah.
Beyond that, pending the results of the ongoing investigation, any further comment on the case is, as Yaacov Lozowick so rightly points out, mere speculation. This fact does not seem to have deterred either Ben White or the Guardian from jumping to the ridiculous conclusion that ‘Israel seeks to silence dissent’ .
Hizbollah is of course an Iranian-backed terror organization with the raison d’etre of bringing about Israel’s destruction. Should the suspicions that Ameer Makhoul and Omar Said Abdo have been spying for Hizbollah prove to have foundation, this would be a case of citizens of a sovereign country conspiring with that country’s enemies. Unfortunately, such cases have occurred in Israel in the past and were at the time dealt with in the same manner as this case is being dealt with now, regardless of the religion or ethnic background of the suspect. Despite White’s claims, Makhoul and Said Abdo are not being investigated as part of a campaign to “suppress dissent and limit civil liberties”; no citizen of any democratic country is at liberty to betray it by spying for its enemies, and when that country is at war such actions take on even more serious implications. As difficult as it may be for Ben White to comprehend, the lives of Israeli citizens of all ages, creeds, ethnic backgrounds and political opinions could be endangered by such acts of treason as those currently being investigated.
White, of course, cares not a fig for the lives of Israeli children living under the shadow of Hizbollah missiles; the important thing on his agenda is to grasp yet another opportunity to self-promote by turning a non-story into an excuse for demonizing Israel. Sadly, the Guardian lowers itself to the same populist level as White by publishing this malicious and irresponsible torrent of meaningless speculation.
As usual, time will tell and the details of this case will eventually be made public when the investigation is complete and the security forces are sure that publicity will not compromise their work. In the meantime, although we know very little about the cases of Makhoul and Said Abdo, we have learned an awful lot about the integrity – or lack of it – of both Ben White and the Guardian. It is doubtful that anyone familiar with either of them would be overly surprised.

A sane, honest account of what the public knows of the case and its implications, IsraeliNurse. Any country faced with similar facts would respond as Israel does and Israel’s neighbours would respond much more strongly.
In fact here is how Lebanon reacted to a directly parallel case:
“Report: Lebanon arrests three Israeli spies
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah says Lebanese nationals who spy for Israel deserve the death penalty.”
and how does Israel actually respond? in the case of Rawi Sultany
“Arab jailed for spying on IDF chief
Sultani, who attended Ashkenazi’s gym, gave info to Hizbullah, gets 68 months.”

Heres to Davy.
A moderate and reasonable article ..the like of which we have come to expect.
However I didnt like …”White, of course, cares not a fig for the lives of Israeli children living under the shadow of Hizbollah missiles” which was unnecessarily condemnatory. You do not know this and are implying a horrible callousness.
My guess is he cares very much indeed and is trying to prioritise his concerns like all of us. He is maybe wrong ..but he is not a frozen hater.

AKUS
Excellent summary of what is known. The Guardian once again uses one of its stable of Israel-haters to render judgment before it knows the facts, and before any judgment by a court has been rendered.
These two are lucky that Israel treats traitors with kid gloves – Hamas recently executed a few Fatah for what it claimed was spying for Israel, as did Hizbollah with several Lebanese citizens.
Judge, jury , and grand inquisitor – that’s the Guardian way!

Whatever the truth of the accustaions against these two, and the outcome, the idea that “dissent is being stifled” in israel is ludicrous.
Dozens protesting arrest of two Israeli Arabs over alleged spying, Hezbollah ties
Israeli academics and international human rights activists rallying outside Petah Tikva court in support of Omar Sayid and Ameer Makhoul.

By the way – where is the “Activist University” and what degree does it confer? I want to be an “activist” also.

Ben White is like a 13yo kid who has just discovered politics but only understands it well enough to spout propaganda, not the issues and lives involved.
“White, of course, cares not a fig for the lives of Israeli children living under the shadow of Hizbollah missiles; the important thing on his agenda is to grasp yet another opportunity to self-promote by turning a non-story into an excuse for demonizing Israel.”
Spot-on. A shameless careerist is Ben White.

AKUS this is lame.. really lame. The AKUS I became fond of…indeed embarrassed myself in front of my fellow Guardinista to defend….would never have used such pedestrian ways to describe people who criticise Israel.
This is the effect of writing here to CIFWatch where this sort of stuff goes unchallenged. They love you here anyway . Believe me …call them “critics” rather than ” Israel-haters “and the Zios here will love you even more.more…and the pro Palies will call you “balanced”..OK maybe thats stretching a point…:)

You’ll never convince that bunch of professional Arabists that they’re wrong. They’ll dismiss your complaints forthwith and silence you on the spot.
There is no real praxis in dissecting every day what this or that cry-baby writes. While doing a great job overall, CIFWatch is going about it the wrong way because words alone never make stones grow soft. We must go after the Guardian itself to win this battle. Less than that won’t suffice.

.” We must go after the Guardian itself to win this battle. ”
Good luck… the Guardian is so safe when attacked by hyperbolic yokel language. It has weaknesses.. but can just sneer at way out allegations of hatred like AKUS’ and expressions like ” that bunch of professional Arabists ”
Whilst it clearly is necessary for people here to be able to shout insults ..CIF will simply see this rhetoric as the typifying nonsense that it is. The difficulty is people here never read it properly …they only shout at it and are doomed to live in its shadow ..as they have no idea of the complexities involved.
If you wish to even scratch CIF you are going to have to work at it.

Listen up you ignorant hillbilly,
the Guardian is not profitable as a stand alone. One decent blow to the head and the whole rotten thing will go down for the count.

For the first time in ages, I posted to a thread (this thread) on CiF. It was pre-moderated as always and when I came back, I saw it had been put up – and then removed.
So, pre-moderation, posting, then removal. How is it that it passed pre-moderation but was then removed?
And all I said was that White was someone who has said that he could, ‘understand why people were anti-Semitic’. It’s true, he did, so why remove my post?
Still, we’ve got enough to worry about with Clegg (who won’t get rid of Tonge) now in government.

In all the nonsense about White I forgot to wish everyone Chag Sameach.
Jerusalem must never be divided – apart from any thing else, there’s no need, as Israel allows freedom to worship to all, unlike many other countries and certainly unlike Jordan who previously held Jerusalem and destroyed Jewish places and items of worship and refused Jews access for worship.

Ben White has often shown a measure of admiration for Hamas and I think he also sometimes writes for the Electronic Intifada, where Hamas is held in much higher regard than Fatah. So presumably, Ben White approves of how Hamas deals with people accused of spying: recently, two such guys were executed by firing squad; a few more are on death row, and there were reports that the whole exercise is actually quite popular among Palestinians because it demonstrates Hamas’s “resistance credentials”.
Maybe Bennyboy was just a bit shy and didn’t quite dare to write the article he would REALLY have liked to write, celebrating Hamas’s executions?

Yohoho
Pots and kettles spring to mind.
(Ben White’s thread at the other place is a classic attempt to stifle discussion and dissent).
Ivy Leaguer take no notice of Berchmans. Al-Grauniad, amd most notably CiF is adversely affected by this blog and its obession with Israel’s alleged evil, which has cost it revenue, to the extent that Berchmans thinks he can rescue it by blethering here (they must really miss him there – not!).
White’s non-article and all the deleted comments beneath it which disagreed with it are a testimonial to CiF’s death throes as a “discussion” blog.
Keep repeating yourself Berchmans and you may even convince yourself that you know what you are talking about, but the lost advertising revenue for CiF as a result of its despicable bias, is all the proof that is needed for intelligent people.
Why else should Georgina leave, or was she pushed or moved upstairs where they thought she couldn’t do them any more damage?

Are you saying that the Guardian survives because of the web…. CIF? Then the articles that post the most hits bring in the advertising revenue…and I/P is paydirt(we may be doomed, “anti-zionism” seems to be a British obsession at times and not just at the Guardian). ….. I’ve read enough about UK Libel Laws….hmmmm, we need someone really well connected & shrewd …. so who do we know? (typed chuckling)

Ben White supports a boycott of Israel, which happens to be a Jewish state and which in turn means a boycott of businesses in the UK, many of them Jewish, which support Israel.
Hitler’s Nazis began their persecution of Jews in German by encouraging Germans to boycott Jewish businesses on 1st April 1933. They didn’t stop there and I’d bet that Ben White, closely followed by Berchmans who would lick his boots like the creep he is and make excuses for him, wouldn’t either if he got the chance.

Ben White’s article was a disaster, this makes it three in row of absolute CiF disasters. His thread started out with “Palestinian citizens of Israeal” which in it self was a nasty provocation.
When he realized his idiotic mistake it became “dozen of Jewish and Arab civilians” they were not Palestinians citizens of Israel anymore..
He had Brian Whittaker come to his rescue.
He kept posting silly updates. This guy is even sillier than I thought,he is a craven coward, and folds and crashes in a heap when confronted.Just as I expected.
No point getting into lengthy debates trying to put your point across, with these people, they just don’t care and are not interested.

I believe you Berchmans. I really do. In spite of you often saying on CiF that you have reported people, I believe that when you write here you are telling the truth and nothing but the truth.
Now others here may think that I am silly and think that you are a lying communist anarchist antisemitic turd.

I don’t think that you are silly but you are partly mistaken.
Berchmans is not a communist, neither anarchist but a common garden variety anti-semite turd masquerading as a leftie. You are correct that he’s lying, and I’d add that he is amazingly ignorant and stupid and not to forget about his delusional braggings.
my style is to leave the posts for all to see then bonque them in front of their pals. I thought you knew that…everybody else does.
Berchmans the only thing that you can bonk is the memory of Anne Frank on CIF. I wish you try to do it when you’ll visit Israel in front of Israelis. The reaction could be the use of disproportionate force but very useful for the future of Scotland.
In a real debate you couldn’t “bonk” an undereducated and underachiever and underfed bacteria.
What everybody knows that you are disgrace, a very bad and obscene joke, a perfect caricature of CIF. Thanks to the site owners’ tolerance you can prove your intellectual and moral qualities and demonstrate all characteristics of the standard “anti-Zionist” CIF-ers for the benefit of the visitors on this site.

Berchmans – White, or anyone else (yourself included) who actually did care about the fact that at least one million Israelis of all colours and creeds live within the range of Hizbollah missiles controlled by a theocratic despot would appreciate that the possibility of espionage in favour of that thuggish regime is a very serious matter and hence would at least bide his time until the facts of the case are clear rather than firing from the hip to create a smoke and mirrors type distraction from the real issue at hand.
