The Gum Flapper (To the tune of "The Wild Rover." Hat tip: Tradition)

He's been a gum flapper for many's the year,
And botoxed his gums till his face felt real queer.
Since now it's all plastic, his gums flap no more,
And the words that he flapped no longer make ears sore.

Chorus: And it's no, nay never;
No nay never, no more
Should we hear the gum flapper.
He was always a bore.

If you ever watched The West Wing on TV, perhaps you'll recall this scene, in which the president sets a Christian fundamentalist straight:

Ok Pretzelberg, we agree on most of it. I won't argue with you anymore since you do seem to listen to reason.

One final thought:

Do you honestly think that the Quran and a Beatles song can be used in the same comparison because both have inspired evil acts? Through this point, your implication is that all these terrorists have simply misread or misunderstood or misinterpreted the basic tenets of the Quran, which are peaceful.

This implication is simply wrong. The Quran explicitly calls for these acts to be undertaken in the name of Islam. ie. To a religious Muslim the terrorists are indeed acting religiously and righteously. Unfortunately when the religious texts call for such barbaric acts, then these texts must be pointed out as the abhorences that they are, even if this means insulting 1.5 billion people.

A-ha - the star ratings. I rarely click on them myself - and only when (and even then far from always) I feel strongly about a comment.
But I have indeed sometimes noticed some funny business going on with the ratings.

What comment(s)are you referring to exactly on this thread?

The practice is childish, expressing pique instead of an evaluation of the opinion. Clicking on stars to show attitude to the commenter instead of the comment - when several have the same opinion and one is singled out - it's obvious

a) Do I assume correctly that they are aimed at the poster Abandoned Hope?
b) What do they mean?

I skimmed through Jody MicIntyre's response to Levick's article and after noticing obvious exaggerations and avoidance of truth I saved myself the annoyance of reading further.

He talks about the lack of ambulances in Gaza during Cast Lead - implying that it was Israel's fault when anyone who read the newspapers and has even an average memory will know that Hamas had stolen the ambulances that the UN had sent for the Red Cross to use for their own purposes.

The second sentence to catch my eye was to the effect that the IDF operates in Biliín 'with full force'. Full force by the IDF would mean bodies littering the floor and the village itself captured. The truth is that they respond patiently to the hurling of boulders with sling shots, a potentially lethal form of attack.

So, thanks Jody, you have reinforced my original impression.

Jody McIntyre's rather feeble response includes the following:

"For the bulk of my time, I have been living in the West Bank village of Bil'in. Every week, local residents, supported by friends from Israel and around the world, march to the Separation Wall, which has stolen over half of their land. And every week, without fail, their non-violent demonstrations are met with the full force of the Israeli army; clouds of tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets and live ammunition"

non-violent demonstrations? Either he does not go there or he feels that since the violence towards the soldiers manning their stations fails to achieve its goal it can be referred to as non-violence.

They are met with the full force of the Israeli army?
Interesting that we don't have a weekly body count of all the dead and that somehow Jody is still alive.
I mean, the full force of the Israeli army does conjure up images of destruction.....or is he just mangling reality and describing the soldiers manning their stations and causing minimal harm to those they are keeping in order.

This sampling is typical of the rhetoric used above and below the line at the guardian, keeper of the electronic intifada, revisionism on steroids.

No, your behaviour is all about drawing attention to yourself. You constantly act out often going too far - your offensive attack on Benito, a case in point.

"How’s that? I don’t recall seeing your moniker before."

Really?? Well, then, I suggest you go see your doctor about a prescription change because you've posted me a couple of times on this very blog. Last time was pretty recent. To clarify, I do not hate Muslims. I do hate the Quran. I woudl also hate the Tenach if it inspired its followers to carry out the same deeds which are carried out by Muslims in the name of the Quran.

How about The Beatles and Helter Skelter?

You also claim that you are "not intolerant of the views of other people" - but have declared you "hate the Quran." Hmmm ...

@ Punzi

You missed my point because I was talking specifically about Benito's contempt for the book forming the basis of one particular religion.

It’s not like I shouldn’t have known better.
