We wish to show our solidarity with Seismic Shock who, as described in his guest post below, has been the victim of intimidation for shining a spotlight on the anti-Zionist theology of Reverend Stephen Sizer. As Ben Cohen at Z-Word says “We Are All Seismic Shock” and he urges readers to tell Sizer what you think by emailing him here. I similarly urge you to do the same thing. For more on this developing story, visit Harry’s Place, ModernityBlog and Engage. We will not be silenced.
This is a guest post by Seismic Shock.
As some people have noticed, I’ve been rather quiet in blogging about the Reverend Stephen Sizer’s activities of late.
After all, what more can be said of a man forwards emails from Holocaust deniers, shares platforms with Holocaust deniers, and shamelessly flaunts his anti-Zionist theology before Iran’s apocalyptic Holocaust-denying regime? As Iranian pastors are arrested and house churches closed down, why is the Khomeinist regime translating Sizer’s book on Christian Zionism into Farsi? How many more times can I point all this out?
Yet there’s another reason why I’ve been quiet, and whilst I’ve held my tongue and my pen for a while, now is the time to speak.
At 10am on Sunday 29th November 2009, I received a visit from two policemen regarding my activities in running the Seismic Shock blog. (Does exposing a vicar’s associations with extremists make me a criminal?, I wondered initially). A sergeant from the Horsforth Police related to me that he had received complaints via Surrey Police from Rev Sizer and from Dr Anthony McRoy – a lecturer at the Wales Evangelical School of Theology – who both objected to being associated with terrorists and Holocaust deniers.
(Context: Sizer has associated with some very nasty terrorists and Holocaust deniers; McRoy has delivered a paper at a Khomeinist theological conference in Iran comparing Hezbollah’s struggle against Israel via suicide bombing with the Christian’s struggle against sin via the atoning death of Jesus, and describes the world’s most prominent Holocaust denier as an “intelligent, humble, charismatic, and charming” man who “gives quick, extensive and intelligent answers to any question, mixed with genial humour”).
The sergeant made clear that this was merely an informal chat, in which I agreed to delete my original blog (http://seismicshock.blogspot.com/) but maintain my current one (http://seismicshock.wordpress.com). The policeman related to me that his police force had been in contact with the ICT department my previous place of study, and had looked through my files, and that the head of ICT at my university would like to remind me that I should not be using university property in order to associate individuals with terrorists and Holocaust deniers (I am sure other people use university property to make political comments, but nevermind).
With my research on Reverend Sizer’s associations with terrorists and Holocaust deniers making its way into a publication of the Society of Biblical Literature, I was quite content to hold my peace. However, now that Reverend Sizer is now misrepresenting what has happened in my case in order to intimidate others, now is the time to speak up.
A Christian blogger – “Vee” of LivingJourney, who is based in Australia – linked to my blog as a resource for Christians to learn about anti-Semitism in the Church, including “lots of info on Stephen Sizer and Sabeel”.
Rev Sizer left her this comment:
Dear Vee,
You must take a little more care who you brand as anti-semitic otherwise you too will be receiving a caution from the police as the young former student of Leeds did recently. One more reference to me and you will be reported.
Blessings
Stephen
Sure, Stephen Sizer managed to somehow arrange a police visit to me from within the UK, but does Sizer genuinely think he can use police on the other side of the world to this effect?
Why is Reverend Sizer claiming that I received a police caution, when the police stressed I did not receive a caution? Is Sizer deliberately misrepresenting the same police force that he originally used to his advantage?
Who is Reverend Sizer reporting to, and why does Reverend Sizer genuinely feel he has the power to close down debate by threatening police action? Why call the cops rather than answer his critics?
Political and theological disagreements should never be accompanied with threats of litigation or police action, but instead with logic and open debate.

This is a good article about harrassment I am pleased CIFwatch is taking up such causes.
I look forward to an article on the flooding in Gaza which many suggest was the result of a dam being opened without consultation.
http://rt.com/Top_News/2010-01-19/flood-gaza-israel-conflict.html
I am not suggesting that CIFwatch would avoid such a topic.

There are very respectable people who doubt the existence of a Higher Power. This includes many of those who regularly contribute comments here. It is for this reason that this story has been kept from the general public However, the truth is that Israeli rabbis prayed for rain. It is well known that there is a special connection between the Jews and the Higher Power who will not be named. The rabbis who claim in their defence that they only did it because of the dire lack of water in the Middle East. This is of course ridiculous because Israelis have plenty of water.
It is also suspected but not confirmed that it was the fault of the same Higher Power that there were floods in the UK this year. We will be reporting further on this exciting story.

In the USA, Sizer would be considered to have commited several illegal acts. Misuse of the police process is illegal. Interference in Seismic Shock’s employment may consitute tortious interference. And civil liberties organisations would offer pro bono civil action against Sizer for these acts, on Seismic’s behalf.
It is worth investigating whether analogues exist in the UK.

Berchmans – you cannot reist the endless cheap shots that are the maximum you are capable of.
I look forward to an article in the Guardian about flooding in Tel Aviv claiming it was caused by Palestinians blocking the drains there.
No doubt you also believe that Israel was responsible for the drought in other parts of the Middle East since the Zionists control the weather by retaining clouds over their own country rather than letting them make their way into the arid deserts around it. Of course, you no doubt believe that that is with the exception of particularly heavy rain over Gaza in the hope of thoroughly flooding it to make life miserable for the long-suffering Gazans. Except when the Zionist entity is also busy contaminating the water there and making sure the Gazans have no drinkable water. That’s why they wast water in the Negev – so the gazans will all go thirsty.
Any other nasty conspiracy theories to share with us? World domination? A blood libel? Organ harvesting in Haiti? Gaza’s banks at the mercy of Jewish bankers? Other nasties you can scratch up from the Internet?

I also fund Sizer’s comment extraordinary. Isn’t it a verbal threat that should surely result in his prosecution? He is trying to intimidate the other person, trample his/her right to free speech – one would think a decent lawyer could throw the book at him.
Reminds me a bit of Stevehill’s threats against this blog.

I admit it was a cheap shot to point to the floods and a vehicle for reminding CIFwatch that real situations are occuring which makes the silencing of a voice seem less urgent than a poor community in deluge.
But you leaping to world / domination/ Jewish bankers ? I suspect you change your style for CIFwatch from the calm.. if right wing ..zionist on CIF to the slightly more suspicious and righteous persona evident here.

Berchmans – “leaping to world / domination/ Jewish bankers” – is that any stranger than “leaping” to Israel controlling the flooding of gaza?
No stranger than that pathetic interview you cited with the woman interviewing Kedar doing her best to somehow connect an act of nature with Israel deliberately flooding Gaza and then asking why Israel wasn’t helping the follow victims and trying to use the issue of rain (!!) to drag the discussion once again to Israel’s blockade Gaza!!
But after all, Victoria Brittain did the same on CiF .. so why not?

Its clear from the blog at Harry’s Place that the Reverend Sizer did hang out at a conference with some terrorists and Holocaust deniers. All’s Seismic Earthquake did was report the truth. That shouldn’t require a visit from the police. Modernity’s blog has a good summary.

Seismic Shock,
It sounds appalling, and it very much sounds as though Sizer is using the well-trodden method of trying to use the law to intimidate his critics.
The only line I would take issue with is this…
“Political and theological disagreements should never be accompanied with threats of litigation or police action, but instead with logic and open debate.”
Yes, in a perfect world they should – regarding freedom of speech, I’m something of an absolutist.
That being said, there are things that are said that do cross over into the realm of the criminal law – notably incitement to violence and murder (not that your comments did, I must add).
Having seen in recent weeks both a call to murder Israeli civilians in the settlements, and a call to murder Palestinian civilians in Gaza, there are clearly some things that go beyond ‘fair comment’.

To start at the beginning:
Berchmans: Why don’t YOU begin by protesting the flooding in Gaza, due to Hamas stealing sewer pipes to make kassams? Do it on CiF. Show us your mettle (what there is of it) and post a copy here. I bet you wouldn’t have the nerve.
To continue – there is nothing more nasty or dangerous than a “higher power driven” religious maniac of the Sizer type. He seems to exhibit all the characteristics of the malignant narcissist in power (Gorgeous George is very similar).
Most appalling for me was the way in which such a man could use his religious connections to try to influence the course of justice and that the local police should have got involved in a civil matter.
Sizer is friendly with and shares platforms with Islamists and holocaust deniers and other dregs. Given how quickly these involve the police if anyone disagrees with them publicly, then what happened to Seismic Shock is not surprising and perhaps an indicator of what is to come if these people are not reigned in.
Oh yes, and Sizer is linked to Sabeel, led by the malignant and rabid antisemite, Naim Ateek. It seems that you really can judge a man by the company he keeps.

I know nothing of the Rev. Sizer beyond the info givien here – his ‘Blessing’ accompanying a threat is somewhat hypocritical and meaningless – underlines his unpleasantness in fact. Intimidation should be resisted at all times – bullies should be exposed.
The underpinning of politics with theology can be a nasty business. Post Holocaust some Christian theologians examined the underlying principle that the conversion of Jews to Christianity was a religious duty – recognising that this had contributed to both the persecution of Jews and a reduction in their numbers. It is obvious to the least theologically educated that the divinity of Christ as the Redeemer is predicated upon the Jewish scriptures – without Judaism there is no Christianity.
Unfortunately the urge to convert or condemn is still central in some Christian sects – some go beyond condemnation of Jews and Judaism to the condemnation of Christians who support Jews or recognise Israel as the Jewish homeland. I know some church goers who deny that Jesus was Jewish. Stupidity is an incurable disease and often catching.
Cyber space is the latest arena for bullies and those who seek to intimidate and suppress both truth and freedom of speech.

Leni,
It’s a bit worse than that, it is the intersection of cyberspace in the real-world.
Suppose you had a blog, and wrote mild criticism of some self promoting individual, who, in your view, articulated some rather dodgy ideas, you wouldn’t expect the police to come around to your home? and get you to delete that blog completely.
Particularly when the mild criticism was backed up by evidence, ample evidence.
Policeman knocking on your door in those circumstances is something from Soviet times, from Police States, China, etc
It’s not something that a member of the clergy should invoke, and certain not something that he should actively push.

It is hard not to wonder whether there is more to this as it seems remarkable that the police would act in this way. And doesn’t the comment left on the blog of ‘Vee’ constitute ‘false witness’?
Either way, Sizer’s approach has completely backfired on him as this story will huge in the blogosphere, bringing ever more people’s attention to the underlying controversies about Sizer. I’ve no doubt that the mainstream media will jump over this story too as it seems an unprecedented course of events.

DF, no it isn’t. Are you seriously asking us to believe that the police cannot be leant on? Look what happened in the West Midlands about “Undercover Mosque” when the police were forced to try to make a case against Channel 4 by the people about whom the programme was made. This is despicable conduct by the police force, and Channel 4 was exonerated subsequently.
It is incumbent to stand up to such people.
Sizer is a overinflated loon, probably made more so by the company he keeps. And given that most police forces are oversensitised to alleged racial offence (except when it is directed at Jews), I wouldn’t put it past them to have been influenced by that.

I have heard about your blog and I want to wish you every success in your endeavours to promote truth and understanding.
I wrote to Stephen Sizer as follows:
“Rev Sizer
I read about your intimidation of a “student” because he had the temerity to associate you with Holocaust deniers and anti-Zionists, and how you subsequently broadcasted the fact that he was given a caution by the Police, which carries a criminal record – when in fact this was not true.
What is a fact, is that people are judged by who they are connected with. You have the unenviable (in my view) reality of being associated with people such as Rabbi Yisroel Weisz and Dr Zahra Mostavi, daughter of Ayatollah Khomeini, and the fact that you deemed it acceptable to threaten somebody in this way, then lie about the circumstances, shows you in a very poor light.
Whether people like you are in favour of it or not – the State of Israel is a fact, and you, of all people – as a (supposed) “good Christian” should listen to both sides of the argument before misrepresenting the Church’s views and adding more fuel to the fire of the Israel/Palestine conflict by throwing your lot in with Iranian anti-Zionists and the likes of Naeem Ateek, who are known anti-Zionists, and Ateek in addition displays blatant anti-Semitism.
I am a regular church goer, and I thank God that people with your outlook are in the minority in our faith. I am, as a Christian, compelled to disassociate myself from you and your views.”

In the USA a black Christian pastor condemned the wrong actions of Obama and got a visit from the FBI and local cops and I think a federal marshall merely to question him. He did what I would do and what I’d like others to do.
The black Christian pastor said only two things:
“I don’t want to talk to you. Get out of here.”
And then he went back to his PC as they walked out.

Support is coming slow but surely.
Rev. Sizer’s decision to use the police in a non-criminal matter is highly questionable and actually brings his dodgy views into focus, via the Streisand effect.
I am hoping that more blogs in the US will cover it shortly, as I believe they have a more politically developed sense for freedom of speech once the issues are explained.
It sets a terrible precedence, that the State can physically enter your home and intimidate bloggers over rather mild political criticism, when no criminal matters are involved.

Ken Thomas,
I agree with what I think it your main point, which is that Americans should not be intimidated by the government in the disgraceful way that Seismic was, but, you should be careful. I do not know what the pastor said, but the Secret Service and the FBI have an absolute duty to protect the president, and sometimes they have to speak to people to be sure. If nothing more came of it, then the minister was no threat.
Further, given the above, it is in very bad taste to quote John Wilkes Booth.

Irit, some considerations:
1. Sizer is not the President or Prime Minister.
2. The FBI and Secret Service responsibilities do NOT extend to inquries about purely political statements.
Mistreating a Colorado citizen for criticising Cheney to his face, resulted in far more problems for Cheney and the Secret Service than for the citizen:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/us/03cheney.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/18/us/18colorado.html?pagewanted=all
3. The phrase “sic semper tyrannus” was likely authored by Brutus, not Booth.
